Marek:Čo keby sme hrali hru? V ruksaku mám kocku a figúrky.

Emma:Dobre, ale ak vyhrám, kúpiš mi kávu.1

Marek:A ak vyhrám ja, ty kúpiš kávu mne.

Lucia:Emma, ty začínaš, hoď kockou!

-úci, -iaci: who is doing it

Slovak can turn a verb into an adjective that says what someone is doing right now: a lion that is sleeping is a spiaci lev. You'll mostly read and hear these. In speech, Slovaks often say lev, ktorý spí.

Take the oni form: -ú or -ia goes, and -úci or -iaci comes in: spia → spiaci, plávajú → plávajúci. It changes like an adjective: -i for masculine, -a for feminine, -e for neuter and for the plural (only men keep -i).

  • Tam je spiaci lev.

Ready for the exam

Built for the A2 and B1 exams

The A2 and B1 courses cover the topics and grammar of the official exams in Slovak as a foreign language, and along the way you practise the same kinds of tasks. When you think you're ready, a timed mock exam, built like the real one, will tell you.

  • Mock exams in three timed parts: practise, or sit them like the real thing
  • The same tasks as the real exam: reading, listening, grammar and writing
  • A score for every part, with mistakes linked to the cards that teach them
